Buenos Dias Mexico!

I am the happiest of happy here in Merida, Mexico! The heat is prevalent... but so is our excitement to be here. We are just finishing our first week here in Merida, and I have already learned things I would have never imagined. I've come to appreciate this part of life. God always has something to teach us that we may never had even thought we needed before. I know that when we follow what we know to be true and move forward with an open mind, God teaches us through opportunity, not just trial. It is true that God molds us and teaches us through hard time and trial, but I have also have noticed that some of the sweetest lessons are learned through those moments of  bliss.  A lot can be learned by listening to the laugh of a small child, watching a community work together, or feeling the spirit strongly as you learn an eternal truth. This first week in Mexico has been a dream through my eyes. Our days are filled with adventure, teaching people and being taught by them. I have already learned so much just by watching them. I have been focusing on listening this week. For many of you who know me, I have a tendency to talk a lot, but I acknowledge that to be an effective teacher in another culture, one must understand first. I believe I'm just starting to understand. Nathaly Vasques is my internship partner, and what a beautiful soul she has! The type of person that when they speak you believe them. One of the few people that can give a compliment that is nice to accept. I hope she knows she has that gift. I strive to be that way. We have learned the native dances of Maya culture this week, as well as cooking sweet bread and even a little hula dancing. We are currently working in a community center about an hour out of the city. The classes are every afternoon and are free to the entire community. These community centers offer an assortment of classes including yoga, cooking, and sewing. The offer sets of skills for people to start their own businesses as well as come to build relationships within their community. We are here to help from a public health aspect. We stay for all the classes and help out, participate, and interject when appropriate. We are starting our own classes of nutrition and hygiene as well! Looking forward with anticipation for what adventures being an intern here in Mexico will continue to bring.
